Having a problem logging in? My friend set up the hardware so I think he used this VIA controller to access it back in I bought a GB Western Digital drive, plugged it in, booted to a Linux live CD in order to copy the data from the old drive and… nothing.

You would think if the controller was bad it would not complete the manufacturers diagnostic. Device Manager shows no problems. Any advice would be immensely appreciated.

v8t237 I even wrote a small program that continuously executes smartctl and logs the results to another machine via network just in case the drive failure was preventing saat data from being logged to a file on the machine.

Actually finding a spare drive jumper in the house was another matter entirely — but when I finally did, the drive appeared in the BIOS and everything went according to plan.
